Hot Fudge Sundae Cake

Image
Here's another treat for chocolate lovers. Everything you love about a hot fudge sundae is in this warm chocolate cake.  It makes it's own  fudge sauce on the bottom as it bakes. And its so easy to whip up.  You probably have all the ingredients already.  Whisk to combine the flour, sugar, cocoa,  salt, and baking powder.  Add the milk, oil, and vanilla, whisk until smooth.  Spoon into the pan. I use the same batter bowl to mix the sugar and cocoa for the topping.   Whisk the toping ingredients. Try adding the chopped nuts to just half the cake  toping and see how you like it. Good both ways!                                   Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over                                              the batter. Do not mix. Yo...

The Consolation Prize (A Mocktail)

Image
In the almost six years since I last waddled around in the name of procreation — I know, I make it sound so glowy and glamorous — to my delight, two things in particular have changed: 1. You can now get maternity pants that have almost all of the dignity of regular ones, thanks to small elastic panels above each pocket that frankly would be as welcome the day after Thanksgiving as they are now that I’m approaching the six-month mark and people no longer believe me when I said I just had a really big lunch. (However, a New York-specific rule remains: you’re not actually “big” until someone willingly cedes his or her seat on the subway for you, by which standards, I must be svelte. Hey, I’ll take it.) 2. More pertinently to the scope of a cooking website, a whole lot of bars are making  r eally great mocktails . I credit the fact that there’s been something of a cocktail revolution over the last five years, wherein housemade bitters, syrups, fresh-pressed seasonal juices, s...

Wedge Salad

Image
A good salad to serve with grilled steaks.  I prep all the ingredients beforehand  so it takes just minutes to assemble. If you don't have buttermilk,  just add a little extra sour cream. I've given measurements for the seasonings to give an idea, but you can just eyeball it. No need to measure seasonings This will make 1 C of dressing and you can easily double the recipe. I mix it up in a jar so any extra can easily be stored  in the refrigerator and I can make a quick  wedge salad for lunch. Sometimes I top it with a chopped hard boiled egg. For a buffet, make mini wedge salads. Just cut each wedge diagonally in half  again and put on a platter and then dress. Crisp and fresh!                           Wedge Salad Iceberg lettuce 4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled 1 tomato diced 1/2 C shredded cheddar cheese Cut lettuce in half, then cut each half into 2 w...

Blood Orange Margaritas

Image
Is everyone on vacation without you? Are your social media feeds one big blur of the freckled faces of people you once  thought  you loved basking in the Caribbean sun, showing unintentional contempt for you, back here, shivering and damp? Do your so-called friends in warmer climes gush about pea tendrils and new artichokes while your local market has shriveled roots that last saw the unfrozen earth in October? Of last year? Maybe, just this one time, an exception should be made and a tidy, brief pity party would be acceptable. I have just the elixir. You may not be in the tropics, but glass-for-glass, we can fake it. You may not have fresh coconuts overhead and sweet mango and papaya slices on your breakfast plate, but if we hurry, we can grab onto the tail end of blood orange season and squeeze it into something better. Things might get awkward, however, if you have a three year-old. “What that, mommy?” he might ask as he sleepily wanders in from his rare (but wildly applaud...

Crock Pot Roast

Image
When I'm in the mood for some  "meat and potatoes"   there's nothing like  a good pot roast. This is such an easy  crock pot recipe. Anyone in your family can  make this one. Perfect for a lazy day. It's fast and slow. Fast prep and slow cook. You'll have a very tender roast and  lots  of  rich gravy for your mashed potatoes. We love mashed potatoes and gravy! An au jus packet, a slow cooker packet, water  and cola, any brand will work. Do   NOT   use  diet cola. Diet cola should not be heated.  If I'm thinking ahead and out grabbing lunch,  I'll just dump the ice and refill my drink  with regular cola.   Chuck roast, or whatever cut of boneless beef  you use for a pot roast, 3-5 lbs.   You can be gone all day and come home to dinner.  Thicken the gravy after the roast is fork tender.  Mix cornstarch with a little water. Stir in the mixture and turn to high and cover for  a...

Porch Swing

Image
Post navigation I know, I know, “Deb, what’s up with putting up a summery cocktail recipe a day  after  a blissfully long holiday weekend?” Ah, but I think you’re coming at this all wrong; this drink is, in actuality, three days  early  for next weekend. Or, perhaps, 365 days late for the last time I waxed clumsily poetic about this drink, denied access to it for the duration of a summer pregnancy. It’s nothing short of summer in a glass. It tastes like lemonade. It tastes like iced tea. There are crisp cucumber slices and a splash of 7-Up (for some low-brow fizz, you know?) in a tall glass with ice cubes and if that has not convinced you — and seriously, how did that  not  convince you? — hopefully its name will. It’s call a Porch Swing and they make it at a the St. Louis/Kansas City/Memphis/North Carolina/Texas-styled barbecue restaurant called Blue Smoke. Back in the days when I used to work nearby and was not up at the crack of dawn and noddin...
